Connecting Phones through Modems

Most analog modems have a 'Phone' telephone jack. This jack provides connection to the phone line when the modem is not in use.  CallWatch uses modem to place the call and then switches control of the conversation to the phone when you press the 'talk' button.  The following diagram shows how the phone and the line jacks are connected.

Connecting a phone through an internal modem
Note:  Only regular analog telephones (typically any phones used in a home) can be plugged into the analog Phone jack.  Many office phone systems use digital phones, which cannot be connected directly through an analog phone line.  Most of these phones use a larger connector incompatible with the Phone jack on analog modems.

Hint: You can add a second modem to use with CallWatch.  A slower speed modem works great. All you need is a spare COM port (and spare slot for internal modems).

Troubleshooting Connections

If the modem doesn't dial a number:
Check there is a number to dial
There is no phone line plugged in to the modem.
Check the Com port is correct under Modems Icon in the Windows Control Panel.
The modem doesn't use a standard 'ATDT" Hayes command to dial.

If the modem dials by won't switch to the phone to talk:
There is no phone plugged into the phone jack of the modem dialing.
The string for Hanging up the modem and switching to the phone is not the standard Hayes 'ATH0' command.
