Star Card Installation Overview

Installing the Star Card involves physical installation of the ClockCard in the computer, connecting the GPS to the computer, installing the Windows drivers for ClockCard, installing the Star Sync software, and finally, initializing the GPS and ClockCard. Refer to the ClockCard and Star Sync User’s Guides for step-by-step detailed instructions.
 

1.0   PCI ClockCard Installation 

The PCI version of ClockCard is “plug and play” compatible—nothing needs to be configured on the board. You simply need to insert ClockCard into an available PCI Bus Slot in your PC.

·     Unplug computer from AC outlet.

·     Remove the cover of your computer's case.

·     Place the PCI Real Time Clock into an empty PCI slot.

·     Replace your computer's cover and plug the power supply into an AC outlet.

 1.1  ClockCard Driver Installation - Windows 98/Me Users

·     Turn your computer on and allow Windows to load.

·     Windows New Hardware Wizard will detect the PCI Real Time Clock as a “PCI System Peripheral” or a “Base System Device”.  Select the "Search for the best driver for your device" option.  Make sure the CD-ROM drive option is checked.

·     Place the provided CD-ROM in the drive. When prompted by the New Hardware Wizard for the driver location, select your CD-ROM drive.

·     Check “Specify a location” and  press the ‘Browse’ button to browse for the driver. The driver is usually at D:\ClkCard\Drivers\Drivers\Win98  on the ClockWatch CD.

·     Windows will then install the driver: RTC WinRT WDM Device. This is the device driver for the PCI ClockCard.

·     You can verify driver installation in the Device Manager:

·     Open the Device Manager (Control Panel>System) and select “Hardware”.  The device will be listed as WinRT Devices>RTC WinRT WDM Device.

·     Verify that the device is working properly by selecting the device and viewing its properties.

 

1.2  ClockCard Driver Installation -Windows NT 4.0 Users

·     Turn your computer on and allow Windows NT to load.

·     When prompted to log in, you must log in with either the machine administrator account or a Windows NT domain administrator account.

·     Install the ClockWatch Software. Answer “Yes” when asked when installing a ClockCard.

·     The ClockCard installation installer should install the software. To do so manually, go to the ClockCard\Drivers\Setup.exe file on the CD-ROM

·     Restart the computer.

 Starting the Device  Check in Control  Panel>Devices, there should be a WinRT device that is started.  If not started, attempt to start it manually.

 

1.3  ClockCard Driver Installation - Windows 2000/XP/2003 Users

·     Turn on computer, start Windows 2000/XP/2003.

·     When prompted to log in, login in with either a machine administrator account or a Windows domain account.

·     In most cases Windows will find the new ClockCard hardware.

·     Windows New Hardware Wizard will detect the PCI Real Time Clock as a “Base System Device”.  Select the “Search for the best driver for your device"  (Win 2000) or “Install from a list or specified location” (Win XP/2003) option.  Make sure the CD-ROM drive option is checked.

·     Place the provided ClockWatch CD-ROM in the drive. When prompted by the New Hardware Wizard for the driver location; select your CD-ROM drive.

·     The wizard will give listing of two drivers. If asked to  choose the driver for the RTC WinRT WDM Device, select the Win2k driver located in the
..\drivers\win2k directory on the CD-ROM.


Note: do not install the Windows 98 driver in the Win98 directory

·     If prompted, restart the computer.

 

Verifying Driver Installation

You can verify driver installation by opening the Device Manager through:

·     Control Panel>System>Hardware, or

·     My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager.

The device will be listed as WinRT Devices>RTC WinRT WDM Device.  Verify that the device is working properly by selecting the device and viewing its properties.

 

Reinstalling Driver

If Windows fails to find device, open the Device Manager.  The Device Manager lists ClockCard as:  Other Devices>Base System Device.

·     Click the "Properties" on the Base System Device.

·     Press "Reinstall Driver".

·     Place ClockWatch CD in CD-ROM and choose "Install Software Automatically". 

·     The installation wizard then installs the driver and finishes.

 

2.0 GPS Installation

Plug the NMEA type data cable from the GPS into the computer’s serial port. The data cable usually has a female DB-9 connector at the end and plugs into an available serial port (usually named COM1 or COM2) on the computer.  Note the number of the COM port that the data cable is connected to.  Plug the power connection from the Star Sync receiving unit into the power supply. Plug the power supply into an AC outlet.

3.0 Star Sync Software Installation

·     Place the CD in the drive and allow the Installation Wizard to run.  If the wizard fails to start automatically, choose Run from the Start menu; enter  x:\Setup in the field, replacing ‘x’ with CD-ROM drive letter (usually D or E).

·     Follow the instructions from the ClockWatch installation wizard.

·     When asked for the key code, enter the 7-character code exactly as printed on the sticker on the back of the CD envelope. Enter this code on the registration page of the installation wizard.

·     Select “Yes” when asked if installing a ClockCard.

·     This will start the ClockCard support files installation wizard.

·     When asked the type of ClockCard choose, PCI.

·     At the conclusion of the ClockCard support file installation, the ClockCard setup program should run. This installs the Outsource RTC service files.

·     Upon completion of the ClockCard installation the ClockWatch Star Sync Installation should resume.

4.0 Initializing the GPS

When installation is complete, Start ClockWatch from the Start\Programs\ Beagle Software\ program menu.

·     Select GPS Model number and connecting COM port  for the GPS within ClockWatch GPS Setup.

·     Test the GPS using the GPS Test section within ClockWatch.   Note that the initial positional fix may take several minutes.

·     Enable GPS as a time base, set the Sync Time under GPS options. GPS activity will be shown in the log window of the main ClockWatch screen.

 

5.0 Initializing ClockCard - RTC Service Installation

Normally the Outsource Real Time Clock service is run in sequence with the ClockCard installation script.  If already installed, there will be a entry under ‘Outsource Real Time Clock’ under the Windows Start menu.

To manually install the RTC service files:

  • Choose Setup.exe from the ClkCard\Drivers Directory.

  • This will start the “OutSource Real Time Clock” Service Installation.

  • This will install the service and necessary support files.

  • Reboot the computer at the conclusion of the installation.

 

5.1  RTC Service Initialization

Before running ClockCard the first time, the RTC must be initialized.

·     In the taskbar, note a small clock face with a red ring.  Open the RTC service configuration by double clicking on the red clock face in the task bar.

·     If the clock is not present then, start manually: Select the Outsource Real Time Clock> Real Time Clock Setup from the Start menu.

·     Set the local date, time and the offset from UTC (UTC is the same as Greenwich Mean Time or GMT):

  •   For  EST set UTC to  +5

  •   For CST set UTC to  +6

  •   For MST set UTC to  +7

  •   For PST set UTC to  +8

  Subtract an hour to the offset for Daylight savings time (i.e., EDT is +4).

·     Press ‘OK’.  The Service should now be initialized. Once initialized the service should maintain the time, even when changed from the Windows Date/Time applet.

·     If the initialization fails, you may need to manually stop the ClockWatch Service and start the RTC service to set the local date/time and offset. After initialization, you can restart the ClockWatch service.

 

5.2 Starting and Stopping RTC Service -Win NT/2000/XP/2003

To manually start and stop the RTC Service:

·     Start or stop the service under the Windows Service Manager
  (Admin Tasks>Services)  

·     Open the “RTC Service” to administer.
